Selecting the right Satellite Network

Buying a satellite phone has its challenges and we are here to help you on your journey

Selecting the Right Satellite Network

There are a number of Satellite networks available in Australia today and they all claim to have national coverage however Australia's challenging terrain will depict otherwise.

Satellite Phone Warehouse has collated feedback from our customers to share and aid in your satellite phone purchase.

To also help in your sat phone selection, Satellite Phone Warehouse has placed a small map of Australia in the top right hand corner of the handset's picture to depict the coverage experienced by our customers.

The Thuraya Satellite Network

The Thuraya satellite network is a Geostationary (yes stationary) network that does not orbit the earth. Situated in Australia's north west sky over Singapore way (see map).

The Thuraya network relies on two geostationary satellites at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km and covers over 140 countries. Only one of these satellites serve Australia.

Our customer's usage opinions on using this network are;

 "Great coverage across North, Central, West and North East Australia however marginal in East coast and South NSW, Victoria and even less in Tasmania, however the Telstra and Optus Mobile phone networks tend to pick up slack here".

The Inmarsat Satellite Network

Like the Thuraya Satellite network, the Inmarsat Satellite network relies on geostationary satellites also. Situated in Australia's north sky over Papua New Guinea way (see map ).

Providing global coverage and a satellite serving Australia that is more overhead, the satellite is more visible to the southern Australian states and Tasmania and a better choice to all Australian users.

Our customer's usage opinions on using this network are;

"Great coverage across all of Australia and Tasmania"

 As shown in the attached image, Iridium satellites are crossing (moving at approx. 27,000 km/h) Australia multiple, multiple times every day.

Our customer's usage opinions on using this network are;

"Great coverage across Australia including Tasmania and a great selection of handsets"
